WHAT IS THE BEGINNERS’ COURSE?

The Beginners' Course is an six week course run by Star Sword Club that will prepare you to enter the club as a full member. You will be taught and coached in the basic techniques and conventions of fencing. This will provide you with sufficient knowledge to engage with the main class lessons and fence competently during 'free-play'. [top]

WHAT WILL I BE LEARNING?

The syllabus is designed to cover all the major techniques you will require during your fencing career. Fencing doesn't have a vast number of techniques; the majority of your training will consist of perfecting these actions and learning how and when to use them. It is for this reason that people who teach fencing are generally referred to as Coaches, not Instructors.

To support your initial training Star Sword Club has produced an affordable instructional DVD. See our merchandise section here for full details. [top]

HOW DO I JOIN A COURSE?

For joining information for our Junior Course click here.

There are two ways to join one of our Senior Beginners’ Courses:

Should a course not be available, a series of private lessons can be taken as an alternative. If you require any further information about our courses, or how to join, please contact us. [top]

WHAT COMES AFTER?

Once you have completed the Beginners’ Course you can attend class sessions at the club. These will cover more advanced and in-depth tactics and techniques. There are also awards available similar to martial arts grading systems, although these are not compulsory.

Once you have some experience under your belt, you can move into the competitive circuit. There are local and national competitions available as well as junior and youth competitions for under-18’s. See our Events Page for details of upcoming competitions. You can find a useful guide to getting involved with competitive fencing here.

You may also consider purchasing your own equipment. We strongly urge you to seek advice from a member of the coaching team before you invest, and to exercise caution when purchasing second hand equipment. You can find some basic guideline to help you here.
